Best handyman software for small business
Small jobs still need clear scope, approval and payment records. Compare software that keeps quotes, varied task lists and return visits understandable to you and your customer.

The useful starting point
A varied task list.
One visit combines several small tasks, the customer adds work, and the employee needs to return with materials.

How we research
The short answer: which software fits?
Start here
For a solo handyman or small team doing quoted service visits, Jobber is a sensible first demo. Compare Housecall Pro when office-to-field dispatch is more important, Workiz when calls drive booking, or FieldPulse when configured job and project processes deserve closer evaluation. These are conditional editorial recommendations based on public information; we have not conducted a controlled hands-on comparison.

The difficult part of handyman work is often the boundary between “included,” “added” and “unfinished.” A single appointment may include a door adjustment, shelf installation and a fixture repair, each with different materials. Choose a tool that lets another employee understand the agreed work and remaining tasks without interpreting a long message thread.
Product facts and our interpretation are different kinds of evidence. The scenarios below are original examples to use in your own demonstration; they are not measured product results. See sources and selection method.
Set the demo priority
A varied task list
Book a visit with several jobs and clear scope boundaries. Let the employee identify which tasks are complete, which need materials, and which require a new estimate.
Approval for extra work
Add a customer request during the visit and record the accepted change. Check that the invoice describes the agreed work without requiring the office to recreate it.
Return visits and practical adoption
Leave one task unfinished, arrange another appointment, and have a different employee pick up the record. Test the normal phone and connection conditions used in the field.
Use the selected question as a demo prompt. It does not calculate a product score or choose software automatically. Keep the result, required plan and next owner beside each unresolved requirement.
Compare four candidates by business fit
Shortlist two candidates that match the problem you need to solve. The table is an editorial evaluation route, not a scored ranking. Keep any essential specialist requirement as a pass-or-fail question.
| Your main need | First candidate to evaluate | What to prove |
|---|---|---|
| Solo operator or a small quoted-job team | Jobber | Take a request through accepted scope, a visit, an approved extra and a clear invoice. |
| An office assigning residential work | Housecall Pro | Reassign a visit and keep the technician and customer updated. Confirm the required tier. |
| Phone enquiries are creating lost work | Workiz | Trace a call into the booking and follow-up, including the quoted communication costs. |
| Jobs need a configured process | FieldPulse | Use a varied job with stages, forms and a return visit; verify seats and ongoing administration. |
Jobber
Why consider it: A practical first evaluation for small handyman businesses selling quoted service visits.
Cost check: Use the plan and billing comparison below; a one-user entry package is not a team quote.
Before choosing: Check approved extra work, deposits and return appointments. Bring a multi-day job if you do those regularly, rather than judging only a short appointment.

Housecall Pro
Why consider it: Consider it when the office-to-technician handoff and residential dispatch are the main source of friction.
Cost check: Check the tier used for accounting, employee access and other essential functions.
Before choosing: Have a second employee reconstruct the job from its record. Include a partial completion and a deposit correction.
Workiz
Why consider it: Consider it when calls, booking and customer follow-up are causing lost or duplicated work.
Cost check: Obtain a quote for Standard, Pro or Ultimate, with the proposed bundle and communication usage.
Before choosing: Demonstrate what happens after a customer calls about unfinished work. Record the task owner and the package needed.
FieldPulse
Why consider it: Include it when the business needs a configured process for jobs or projects, rather than only a calendar.
Cost check: Its pricing page describes custom seat-based quotes. Confirm access types, setup and premium products.
Before choosing: Ask a regular employee to follow the configured stages and forms. Price both the initial setup and the time needed to maintain the process.
From an approved quote to an understandable invoice
Use this fictional customer visit: two hours of agreed work at $85/hour plus $45 of materials. The customer approves a separately priced $60 extra. One fixture repair cannot be completed until a replacement part arrives. These are example amounts, not suggested market rates or a product test result.
| Step | Record or outcome to inspect | Question for the demonstrator |
|---|---|---|
| Record the agreed scope | The original tasks and material allowance are visible before arrival. | Can the customer tell what the quote includes? |
| Approve the extra | The $60 change and customer approval are attached to the job. | Is there a usable approval record before the work begins? |
| Mark the unfinished task | The fixture repair has a part note, responsible owner and return appointment. | Can you separate unfinished work from work ready to invoice? |
| Build the invoice | 2 × $85 + $45 + $60 = $275 for the stated completed work, before any tax. | Is any unfinished repair accidentally charged as completed? |
| Apply a deposit | With a $60 deposit already paid, the remaining balance is $215 before tax or other adjustments. | Can the accounting record reconcile the deposit without charging it twice? |
Give the same example to both shortlisted providers. Ask the employee who normally owns the task to complete it, record the exact plan used, and list any workaround. A feature name is less useful than a record your next employee can understand.
What the entry price does—and does not—buy
Jobber lists Core for one user at $29/month equivalent with annual billing; its no-commitment monthly price is $49. Housecall Pro lists one-user Basic at $59/month equivalent with annual billing or $79 monthly. These are different packages, not a like-for-like feature comparison. Prices are in USD and should be verified on the live offer.
Annual subscription arithmetic
Compare the commitment, not just the monthly label
At the published annual equivalents, $29 × 12 is $348 and $59 × 12 is $708. That calculation covers the stated entry subscription only. It does not include payment fees, taxes, migration, extra access or the higher tier your workflow may require.
For example, Housecall Pro places its QuickBooks Online connection in Essentials on the current pricing page. Do not assume a trial proves that Basic contains it. Jobber also separates capabilities across tiers. Write down the exact plan that completed the invoice, deposit and accounting demonstration.
Workiz requires a plan quote; FieldPulse describes custom pricing based on seats and setup. For either, request the number of office and field users, included products, communication usage and implementation charges. Use the full cost worksheet before comparing their proposals with a published entry plan.
A checklist to bring
0 of 6 demo tasks checked.
Tick a task after the person who owns it can explain the result. A checked box is a prompt for your notes, not a rating. This page does not save the checklist after you leave.
Plan the handover
Request a sample import before moving the entire business. Inspect customers, locations, open jobs, balances and the older notes, photos or visit history that matter to the next employee. Agree how excluded records remain accessible.
Give every configuration task an internal owner. Include service descriptions, permissions, recurring schedules, accounting mappings and exception handling. Ask staff to complete an ordinary job, an interrupted job and a correction on the devices they normally use.
Plan a controlled changeover with one owner for each system and a method for avoiding duplicate appointments or invoices. Keep unresolved requirements visible. A successful demonstration is useful evidence; it does not remove the work of maintaining the records after launch.
Choose two demos, then record the decision
Keep the essential requirement, demonstrated result, required package and unresolved gap side by side. If neither candidate can show a must-have workflow, expand the shortlist. A low entry price should not hide work that your office will still need to do manually.

For more options, browse the software directory. If the current process is still manageable, keep it and measure the problem before committing to a larger subscription.
Common buying questions
What is the best software for a solo handyman?
Start with a Jobber demo if you need to connect quotes, visits and invoices. A calendar plus a consistent invoicing process may be enough for a very small workload. The decision should depend on the office work you can actually remove and the plan required to do it.
Do I need a full service platform for occasional jobs?
Not necessarily. List what is breaking in the current process: missed enquiries, unclear approvals, forgotten return visits or repeated invoicing work. Pay for a larger system when it addresses those problems at a cost you can justify, rather than buying every available feature.
Can handyman software replace accounting software?
Do not assume so. Job management and invoicing are only part of the financial record. Demonstrate the intended accounting connection, deposits, refunds and reconciliation with the exact plan and accounting edition you will use.
How should I handle work added during a visit?
Record the changed scope and price, obtain customer approval and attach it to the original job before completing the extra. Ask the provider to show the resulting customer record and invoice. A message sent to the office is not enough if someone must later recreate the agreement.
What if a job needs materials and a return visit?
Keep the unfinished task, material requirement, owner and next appointment together. Have another employee pick up the job from those records. Confirm how completed work is invoiced without accidentally marking the entire job complete.
Should I choose the cheapest advertised monthly plan?
Only if that package meets your requirements. Annual equivalents may require an upfront commitment, trials may expose higher-tier features, and employee access or accounting may require another plan. Compare the full configuration and cancellation terms.
